Basalt - Lava Stone : origins and characteristics

Its therapeutic virtues  ..

There are many! The basalt has capacity retention and heat distribution, which are used for therapeutic purposes. Rich in trace elements and silica, the famous "hot stones" which are actually basalt stones are arranged to sensitive parts of the body to relieve tension and relax the muscles to prepare then to massage.

the lava solidified due to the contact of water or air , more or less slowly, forming different types of lava rock (basalt, andesite, ..). This term comes from the Egyptian language "becken" designating a dark stone.

Indeed basalt is usually light gray (usually "andesite",  material very close to basalt to dark gray, up to black anthracite. It is its natural color without additives !

A very hard rock, basalt is similar to granite in terms of its characteristics. Its texture, moreover, differs slightly from granite as it has sharp edges more or less pronounced and depending  on the type and origin of basalt. Its millions of micro holes allow it to breathe whatever the temperature changes.

Shades of basalt make a material that fits very well in simple and modern style, indoors or outdoors. Its uniform color is appreciated by architects, who often associate it with trendy steel creations.

Home owners also enjoy basalt, its being used as paving, cobblestones and decorative aggregates. In recent years, the basalt is also appreciated in trendy kitchens and bathrooms.

Where can we find basalt? The largest basaltic flows are located in the United States, India, Ireland, France (Auvergne of  course) in Hawaii, but also in Vietnam. The dark areas of the Moon (the "seas") are also formed of basalt.
